The answer to the age-old question of “What is the best ab exercise to lose belly fat?” is…
None! Ab exercises do not create a high enough metabolic response in your body to promote belly fat loss.
A lot of people have been lead to believe that some miracle ab workout will burn their belly fat and uncover their six pack abs.
Problem is… you don’t lose belly fat by doing ab workouts. No matter what those late night infomercials will have you believing.
Focusing your time and effort on ab exercises to try and get a flat belly is a waste of time.
Instead, you would get faster results by spending half the time doing the correct workouts.
As a fitness and nutrition professional, I often get asked what the best exercise for belly fat loss is, well my answer would be full body exercises.
Lose Belly Fat Exercises.
These include variations of different leg movement like squats and lunges, deadlifts, pressing and pulling movements like push-ups and pull-ups, mountain climbers and sprinting just to name a few.
These are the types of full body exercise to lose belly fat that are recommended and proven to be more efficient in a fat burning workout.
The exercises themselves are effective but the way you combine them together in your workout is also very important to maximize fat loss.
You should perform them in a superset fashion and always try to combine a pulling exercise with a pushing movement.
The beauty of full body movements is that they also indirectly involve the ab muscles helping to develop a strong core and six pack abs.
Don’t get me wrong… Even if they work the abdominals, I still recommend doing certain direct abs exercises but these make up a small percentage of the time spent working out.
As I said earlier, your time is better spent performing full body exercises that stimulate a metabolic change in your body that promotes fat loss.
Another important point to maximize your exercise to lose belly fat is your nutrition. You can’t out train a diet full of junk food.
No matter how hard you workout, you abs will still be covered in a layer of fat if you don’t eat right.
Now this doesn’t mean going on a starvation diet, or any kind of diet for that matter. All you need to do is eat sensible foods in moderate portions.
A low glycemic diet like this one that contains plenty of foods that speed metabolism can really accelerate fat loss.
Stop wasting your time on late night infomercial ab gizmos, miracle abs workout or countless hours doing sit-ups and crunches.
They just don’t burn fat which means they will never uncover your abs or even give you a flat belly.
You need to focus on multi-joint movements. They have been proven time and time again to be the real exercise to lose belly fat.
Doing them at a high intensity only makes them that much better. And because they are so efficient they can cut your workout time down to less than 20 minutes per session and 3 times a week is all you need.
Lose Belly Fat Workout.
Here is a small example of what I consider to be the best of both worlds. It’s a high metabolism boosting, high intensity workout that works the entire body while also working the abs.
It doesn’t include any direct ab movement but I often recommend it to my clients as one of the best exercise to lose belly fat.
The routine is done as a tri-set with no rest between exercises and between 30 and 60 seconds rest after all three exercises are completed. Repeat three times.
- 1. Push-Up Plank
- 2. Front Squats with Barbell
- 3. Mountain Climbers on Floor
For the push-up plank do eight reps holding for 10 seconds at the top of the movement. For the squats do eight reps and eight reps each side of the mountain climbers.
These exercise to lose belly fat will give you one of the best ab workouts you’ve ever had without even doing any direct ab exercises. You’ll see what I mean after you try it!
